over the years when students do not do well in CH or GG papers. Hope that it would serve as a good reminder to all as you approach your exams in the following weeks. 1. Content - Never memorise without understandingRead and understand. Some students take exams by just glancing through their text. They based their answers on their understanding of the topic and they will do well. Surprisingly, that kid who memorised information after information from the text.... tend to do less well. Geography needs to be UNDERSTOOD then you can apply. Memorizing is a good method only for remembering facts such as land size of Kalimantan, the location of Pacific Plate, the policy for reduction of poverty in India and its success rate etc.When reading, stop and THINK about the issues. Try to apply examples or imagine yourself in the situations. For example, when studying about food, think of yourself in a LDC and how life would be like, why can't you have access to food.... 2. Analyse and PlanNever attempt a question without analysing the questions thoroughly. Alot of students will begin their answer without a proper understanding of the question and its command and the required length. So in the end, they would write alot of irrelevant words without answering the questions - wasting time, effort and of course, marks!3. TimeStudents lose alot of marks when they are not conscious of time. Once, a student during prelims planned for 45 mins before attempting to write the answer! Gosh! No matter how well you plan, you will not have the time to write them out! In the latest GG papers, you get to do two questions for 1 and half hour. That is equivalent to 45mins per paper. Planning time should be about 10mins or 15mins depending on how fast you write. By experience, if your content is strong, you should not plan longer than 10mins.4. PracticeAlot of students claimed they studied their work but they did not do well. When probed, they usually defined 'studying' as reading the textbook and making notes. That is not enough. Alot of time, its about application of knowledge. Thus, to do well in CH, you need to PRACTICE and PRACTICE and PRACTICE. Read through all the themes for the exams and for the topics that you wish to concentrate on, go through all the available questions. They can be from the workbooks you find in the market, revision books, ten year series or the practice papers that you have. The more you are exposed to different type of questions the more confident you will be.5. Commands in questionsSometimes students will write alot but they do not do well. They would see a few pages of words after words but only gaining one or two marks for them. Why? because QUANTITY DO NOT EQUATE QUALITY! Always be conscious of what the question is asking for and phrase your answer towards it. When asked to describe - describe only, do not 'explain'. When asked to refer to diagrams, make sure you have information taken from the diagrams. When ask to describe the trend - refer to ONE trend. When asked for the trends, give a few and state the information from the diagrams. When asked for examples, make sure you give specific examples to illustrate your points. Finally, when the questions require 5 marks, give up to 5 points or even 6. Do not write up to 12 points (waste time) or only 3 points (waste marks). 6. Spotting topicsIn the exams, there will be questions on combination of themes. For example, GOF can be with DEVT. RIVER with Natural VEG. So while some of you want to 'spot' topics. Make sure you are not going into the exam hall with no knowledge of the other themes at all. At least read through them. You may spend more time practicing questions on themes you like but don't neglect the understanding of other themes.7. Organise your answersSome students lose marks because of their ugly and untidy handwriting! Try to write legibly! Paragraph yours answers if possible, don't chunk everything together. If needed, you can draw illustrations but keep them separated from your explanation. '8. RestLastly, some students study through the night before the exams. During the exams, they are tired, sleepy and they can't remember or think straight. Or they are so sick that they can't concentrate. To do well in this kind of paper, you need to be clear headed. There is a tendency to misinterpret or overlook some points when you are tired. So everyone, make sure you take good care of your health and sleep well before CH and GG papers.
